Peg City is thrilled to launch the Sea Bears Youth League (SBYL), proudly sponsored by the Winnipeg Sea Bears.
SBYL is a new district-based league where each team is paired with experienced club-level coaches who focus on skill development and game concepts. Players register within their school catchments, enabling them to team up with friends, while still benefitting from guidance provided by club-level coaches.
At the conclusion of the season, teams in each age group compete in the SBYL Knockout Championship to determine which district will claim the inaugural crown!
Other perks include:
Don't wait to register - each team is paired with club-level coaches, and we must cap registrations. Spaces are limited, so secure your spot today and be part of the debut season!

Registration Fees for the SBYL are as follows:
*Financial assistance for this program is available through KidSport. To apply, visit KidSport Winnipeg.
1. How do I get placed on a team?
Team placement is determined by catchment area, age, and skill level. Registration includes providing details about playing experience and preferred level of play, which helps ensure players are matched with the most suitable team.
2. What is the Canada Basketball Fee?
A separate $9 membership fee per participant is collected directly by Canada Basketball on an annual basis. This avoids double-charging for those in multiple programs.
3. When does registration open and close?
Registration opens on January 21st and will close on February 12th or as soon as capacity is reached. Spots are expected to fill quickly, so be sure to register early to secure yours!
4. What do players receive?
The Sea Bears Youth League delivers a basketball experience with expert coaching from seasoned coaches.
In addition to a high-quality instruction, players gain access to an enriching season packed with benefits. Each player will receive an official reversible Sea Bears Youth League jersey, exclusive discounts on Sea Bears tickets and merchandise, and even visits from select Sea Bears players.
5. What is the cost?
The league fees vary by age category. For detailed information, please refer to the registration information page.
6. Is financial assistance available?
Yes, financial assistance is available through KidSport. To apply, visit KidSport Winnipeg. Once your application is approved, KidSport will send us a cheque, and we will refund the amount they approve.
Please note that refunds are typically processed in batches during the first week of the following month.
7. When does the league start and end?
The league runs from mid April to late June. All teams will get a chance to compete for the SBYL Championship in their respective divisions at the end of the regular season.
8. How many games and practices are there each week?
Players will have one game and at least one practice per week (there are no games scheduled on holidays or Sea Bears nights!).
9. When are game days?
Game days are scheduled by age group, with specific days assigned to ensure a smooth and organized season. Final schedules will be released after registration closes, as they depend on the total number of participants in each age group. Please note that it may take some time to finalize the schedule, as we also need to wait for divisional permit approvals before confirming locations/times.
Games for ages 7-10 start between 6:00-6:30 PM, and games for ages 11-14 begin between 6:00-8:00 PM.
*No games will be held on Sea Bears home game nights, May 16 & 23 games will be moved to alternate days.
10. When are practice days?
11. What should I expect on game days?
12. Is the age group separated by gender or is it co-ed?
Teams will be separated by gender and age.
13. Can players participate with friends in different catchments?
Teams are primarily formed within school division catchment areas to ensure balanced and fair play. While players may indicate a friend request in the "Comments/Notes" section during registration, accommodating such requests across different catchments is challenging. Efforts will be made to consider such requests for special circumstances; however, approval cannot be guaranteed.
14. What happens if my area receives too many registrations?
Each area is limited to two teams of 10 players (max 20). If an area receives more registrations than available spots, players will be transferred to nearby zones with open space to ensure everyone has a chance to participate. Priority will be given to players who reside within the catchment area.
15. Who runs the league? Who do I contact for more information or support?
The league is fully managed and operated by Peg City Basketball. The Sea Bears are proud to support the league as a sponsor and licensor but are not involved in operations. For any questions or support, please contact Peg City Basketball.
